Questions we hear most

Who can take a lifeguard course?

Anyone who is 15 or older on the first day and passes the swim test. Teens, college students, camp and pool staff and adults all take the same course.

What is the swim test?

A continuous swim, treading water and bringing an object up from the deep end. We describe it when you register, and an instructor walks you through it on test day.

How long is a course?

It depends on the session: two weekends, four days in a row or a week of weekdays.

What should I bring?

A swimsuit or swim shirt, a towel, a change of clothes, goggles if you like and lunch on a full day. We provide the manikins, rescue tubes and backboards.

What if I miss part of a session?

A course asks you to attend every session. If you miss part of one, we move you to the same part of the next course.

What happens if the pool closes?

We text everyone as soon as we know, and the session is made up.

How do I recertify?

Come to a recertification day before your card runs out. It is a day of rescue skills, CPR and a short written test.

Can my camp or pool book a staff course?

Yes. Tell us how many people need the course and when your season starts, and we plan the dates with you, at your pool or ours.

How does tuition work?

It depends on the course, and our current figures are on the enrollment page.

How do I start?

Book a swim test, or call and tell us which course you have in mind.
